When an emergency strikes, you need to act quickly because time is of the utmost importance. The quicker you respond to the emergency and receive care from your dentist, the more likely we are able to save your tooth from permanent damage. Not to mention, the treatment required will be far less complex than if you were to leave the emergency untreated.
What are Dental Emergencies?
Often, it can be difficult to determine what type of oral health problem requires immediate treatment. A dental emergency is classified as any dental problem that requires immediate treatment to save a tooth, stop severe pain, or stop ongoing tissue bleeding. In cases of an infection that can become life-threatening, such as a dental abscess, are also classified as dental emergencies. How you respond to each situation will have a large impact on the outcome of the emergency.
Knocked Out Tooth—Trauma may cause a tooth to get knocked out or become dislodged. For dislodged teeth, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce discomfort and head to our office. Should the tooth be knocked out completely, if the root is intact, rinse the tooth using only water. Do not dry the tooth. Try to reinsert the tooth back into the socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk and come to our office. In order to save the tooth, we will need to see you within 30 to 45 minutes.
Severe Pain—It’s not uncommon to have a toothache. However, some toothaches are a sign of a serious problem. When a toothache is at the point the pain is unbearable, you need to come to our office right away so we can find the cause of the pain, such as a broken tooth. In the meantime, you can try over-the-counter pain relievers and apply a cold compress to relieve the discomfort.
Dental Abscess– A dental abscess results from an infection. If the infection is left untreated, it can travel to the bloodstream. Should the infection enter the bloodstream, this turns into a life-threatening situation. If you notice a pimple-like bump or any pus-filled bump in your mouth, you need to see your dentist.
