Invisalign is an excellent option for patients who would like to align their teeth with discretion. Now that you’ve decided to take the plunge with Invisalign, you’ll need to know how to take care of your aligners during your treatment. Your cosmetic dentist in The Woodlands has some helpful tips and advice to make your time with Invisalign smooth and comfortable.
Your Daily Routine
One of the benefits of choosing Invisalign to correct your smile is that it’s a very easy system, and there are not many changes to your daily routine required. You’ll receive a series of clear plastic trays, and you’ll need to wear each set for at least 20-22 hours per day in order to achieve your desired results. Every 2-3 weeks you’ll change your trays out for the next set.
Dr. LeBlanc or Dr. Smits will see you every 4-8 weeks to monitor your treatment and make sure your teeth are progressing as planned. There are typically fewer visits with your dentist needed during Invisalign treatment than would be required with traditional braces. Most Invisalign cases can be completed in 15-18 months, which means this a very efficient system.
Caring for Your Aligners
Your aligners can easily be removed for brushing, flossing, and eating. You’ll need to clean them daily with a cleaning kit, or you can simply brush and rinse them with lukewarm water. You’ll be able to maintain your normal home care routine with regular brushing and flossing.
Aligners should be removed for eating, and can occasionally be taken out for special events or meetings. Your goal is to achieve at least 20 hours of wear per day, if not more.
Wear Your Retainers
When your Invisalign treatment is completed, you’ll receive a set of upper and lower retainers that you should wear every night while you sleep. Believe it or not, your teeth have memory, and their tendency is to shift back to the way the were prior to treatment without diligent retainer wear. Our doctors will want to check your retainers periodically at your routine checkups to ensure that they’re still fitting properly.
